The famous Bruschetta: Origins, Recipe & More!

Cooking Traditions, Italian food, Recipes, Traditions

Despite its simplicity, which always triumph in the Italian kitchen as well as in life, the bruschetta is one of snacks and appetizers most loved by Italians.

When was the bruschetta born?It is difficult to determine with certainty the year in which this simple delicacy first entered people’s palate, but its origins are very ancient. In fact, the Etruscan used to drizzle olive oil on their bread to make it more flavorful. But the bruschetta as we know it which in time has taken 1,000 different shapes and flavors, was born among poor Roman and Tuscan farmers who did not want to throw away staled bread so they would wet it and drizzle it with olive oil and salt. After discovering how delicious bread with salt and oil was, they started toasting the bread and experiment with different toppings. The classic bruschetta became toasted bread with garlic, olive oil, salt, tomatoes and basil. Little by little, people started using olives, cheese, prosciutto and other condiments. Ever since I was a little girl and still today, when I have an “attack of hunger” during the afternoon, the bruschetta is the first thing I make!

Ingredients:

  • Sliced artisan bread

  • Olive oil

  • Garlic

  • Cherry tomatoes

  • Fresh basil

  • Sale

In a small plate, cut the tomatoes and season them with olive oil and salt. Those who like it can also add oregano. Toast the bread in an electric oven or in a toaster. Rub the garlic on the slice, then add the tomatoes already seasoned. Garnish with basil leaves. If you wait about 20 minutes, the bread will soften as the oil and tomatoes natural juice sip through and it’s the absolute best!

Viva la semplice bontà!

Hurray to simple goodness! (the literal translation doesn’t do it justice)

Ingredienti:

  • Pane casareccio tagliato a fette

  • Olio d’oliva

  • Aglio

  • Pomodorini pachino

  • Basilico fresco

  • Sale
