Potere vs. Riuscire 

The verbs potere and riuscire both mean “can” and “to able to”; however, they are almost never interchangeable.
Potere is used when the subject has a choice on whether he/she is going to be doing something or not.
Stasera non posso venire alla festa.
Tonight I can’t come to the party.

Oggi non posso fare i compiti perchè ho troppo da fare.
Today I cannot do the homework because I have too much to do.

In this last example, the subject cannot do the homework not because he/she is incapable of doing it but rather because he/she chooses that there are more important things to take care of. Let’s look at how the meaning changes if we use the verb riuscire.

Riuscire, in a negative phrase, always refers to the inability, either mental or physical, to do something.
Non riesco ad arrivare in tempo perchè sono bloccato nel traffico.
I can’t make it on time because I’m stuck in traffic.

Non riesco a fare i compiti; questo problema è troppo difficile.
I can’t do the homework because this problem is too hard.

In both of these examples, the subject is trying to do the task or get to the destination but he/she is physically or mentally unable to do it. This distinction between potere and riuscire is very important and as always, I’d be happy to further discuss during class.

Potere è usato quando il soggetto è libero di scegliere se fare o non fare qualcosa.
Stasera non posso venire alla festa.
Oggi non posso fare i compiti perchè ho troppo da fare.
In quest’ultimo esempio, il soggetto decide di non fare i compiti perchè ha altre priorità; il che non significa che lui/lei non è in grado.

Vediamo come cambia il significato usando il verbo riuscire.

Riuscire, in una frase negativa, si riferisce sempre all’inabilità, mentale o fisica, di fare qualcosa.
Non riesco ad arrivare in tempo perchè sono bloccato nel traffico.
Non riesco a fare i compiti; questo problema è troppo difficile.
In entrambi gli esempi, il soggetto sta provando a fare qualcosa o ad arrivare ad una destinazione ma lui/lei si trova davanti un impedimento fisico o mentale.

Questa differenza fra potere e riuscire è molto importante e come sempre sarò felice di continuare a parlarne a lezione.
