Il Ponte del Diavolo – The Devil’s Bridge

In Bobbio, a quaint village in the province of Piacenza, there is a bridge, dating back to Roman times, that crosses the Trebbia river and connects the two main areas of the borgo. The bridge is considered the symbol of the town but why is it called “Ponte Gobbo” (Hunchbacked Bridge) or “Ponte del Diavolo” (Devil’s Bridge)?

The answers lies in an ancient legend.The village’s inhabitants needed to connect the two banks of the Trebbia river, so the Devil showed itself to San Colombano, a missionary priest who had just finished building an Abbey there, and offered to help him build the bridge. However, what he wanted in exchange was the soul of the first person who would cross it.He accepted and that very night the Devil, helped by other demons who were holding the arches (that’s why the bridge is architecturally irregular), built the bridge. The next morning the Devil stood at the end of the bridge waiting for its compensation, but the Saint, instead of a person, had a dog cross the bridge. The Devil, mad for having been played, kicked the bridge so hard that left a bend in the bridge, hence the name hunchbacked.

A Bobbio, un caratteristico borgo in provincia di Piacenza, c’è un ponte, risalente all’epoca romana, che attraversa il fiume Trebbia e collega le due zone principali del borgo. Il ponte è considerato il simbolo della città; ma perché si chiama Ponte Gobbo o Ponte del Diavolo?

La risposta giace in una antica leggenda.Gli abitanti del borgo avevano l’esigenza di collegare le due sponde del Trebbia, così il Diavolo si manifestò a San Colombano, un monaco missionario che lì aveva appena finito di costruire un’abbazia, e gli propose di aiutarlo a costruire il ponte; ciò che chiedeva in cambio era l’anima della prima persona che lo avrebbe attraversato.Il Santo accettò e così quella notte il Diavolo aiutato da alcuni demoni, che reggevano le arcate (ecco perchè il ponte ha un profilo irregolare) costruirono il ponte. Il mattino successivo il Diavolo si appostò alla fine del ponte per riscuotere il suo compenso, ma San Colombano al posto di una persona, fece attraversare il ponte da un cane. Il Diavolo, adirato per essere stato preso in giro, diede un calcio al ponte così forte da farlo piegare lasciandogli una gobba, da dove deriva il nome gobbo.
