This trip blends cultural immersion, language learning, and multigenerational connection across two of Guatemala’s most iconic regions: Antigua and Lake Atitlán. It’s built around hands-on engagement with local traditions that are woven through daily life and grounded in long-standing relationships with the people who bring the country’s heritage to life.
We begin in Antigua, where Spanish language sessions are tailored to age and level, and the city becomes an open-air classroom. Kids and adults alike connect language to culture through scavenger hunts in the market, visits to a local school, and afternoons making chocolate from bean to bar.
From there, we travel to Lake Atitlán, staying at the sustainably run Anzan, a design-forward retreat rooted in Mayan wellness practices and environmental stewardship. Days here are a mix of creative learning like carving jade with a Tz’utujil artist, weaving with women in San Juan, joining a cacao ceremony, or reading lakeside while the children swim or play.
There’s space for everyone to connect on their own terms. This is a journey designed for families who want to travel with intention, where curiosity, rest, and discovery are all equally part of the plan.
Like all Life Beyond the Room experiences, this trip is guided by Sensorial Travel™: thoughtful, sustainable, and deeply personal. It honors the culture that welcomes us, and makes room for presence, reflection, and genuine connection.
Why this trip is different
- An upgraded stay on Lake Atitlán
We’ve chosen Anzan Atitlán, an intimate eco-conscious retreat set between San Marcos and Tzununa, with private lake access, volcano views, and thoughtful design that reflects both simplicity and soul. - A truly immersive family experience
This is a shared journey for both kids and adults. Kids can enjoy a custom-designed Spanish workbook that keeps them engaged, while curated and immersive activities, like a Maguay weaving workshop, invite the whole family into the story. - Connection beyond the itinerary
We keep our groups intentionally small and relationship-based. This is a chance to build real connections with fellow travelers, local communities, and the place itself. - Facilitated by a team who knows Guatemala and knows how to travel well
From our local friends to our trip leaders, each detail has been considered. You’ll feel supported from the first conversation through the final farewell.
