Italian Grammar: The Essere & Andare Dilemma

I often ask my students how their weekend was or a particular event I knew they had, and the answer always gets very confusing. This is where we step into one of the many cultural aspects of the language.

The question, “How was it?” and the answer “It was great” should be deleted from your vocabulary when speaking Italian as they are too general and cannot be applied to every situation. The literal translation of “how was it?” is “com’era?” and can only be used when looking for a descriptive answer such as “it was hard, easy, beautiful, ugly, etc.”
Ei. Com’era l’esame? Era molto difficile
How was the test? It was very hard

Com’era la pasta? Buonissima!
How was the pasta? Really good!

Com’era il film? Bellissimo!
How was the movie? Very beautiful!

When the question “How was it?” refers to an event, we need to get used to asking, “How did it go?”
Ei. Com’è andato l’esame? È andato abbastanza bene
How did the test go? It went fairly well

Com’è andata la festa? Così così; non è venuta molta gente
How did the party go? So so; not a lot of people came

Now that we’ve hopefully cleared some confusion of the basic question “How was it?” and short answers, let’s look at some expressions that are really handy when trying to describe your enthusiasm or when thanking someone. As you will notice, most of these cannot be translated literally.

Sono stato/a davvero bene! – I truly enjoyed myself and my time. I had a great time.
Mi ha fatto davvero piacere conoscerti – It was truly a pleasure meeting you
Grazie infinite per la vostra ospitalità! – Infinite thanks for your hospitality
È stato bello rivederti! – It was great to see you again!
Grazie di cuore! – Thank you so much (from my heart)

Chiedo spesso ai miei studenti com’è andato il loro fine settimana o un evento particolare dove sapevo andassero, e come rispondere confonde sempre un po’ tutti. Questo, amici miei, è uno dei tanti dilemmi culturali della lingua.

La domanda, “how was it?” e la risposta “it was great” dovrebbero essere eliminate dal vostro vocabolario quando parlate in italiano perché sono troppo generiche e non si possono usare per ogni tipo di situazione. L’espressione letteraria “how was it?” sarebbe “com’era? e può essere utilizzata solo quando si cerca una risposta descrittiva come “era difficile, era facile, era bello, era brutto ecc.”

Es. Com’era l’esame? Era molto difficile
Com’era la pasta? Buonissima!
Com’era il film? Bellissimo!

Quando invece la domanda “how was it?” si riferisce ad un evento, dobbiamo abituarci a chiedere “how didi it go?”

Es. Com’è andato l’esame? È andato abbastanza bene
Com’è andata la festa? Così così; non è venuta molta gente

Ora che spero di aver chiarito la confusione riguardo la domanda “how was it?”, impariamo alcune espressioni utili quando si cerca di esprimere il proprio entusiasmo o quando si vuole ringraziare qualcuno. Come vedrete, la maggior parte di queste non si possono tradurre letteralmente.
