There is no doubt that Italians love to party; however, when Christmas arrives the celebrations never end! In Italy, the holidays begin on Christmas Eve and end on January 6th with the Epiphany.
The Sweets
During the months of December and January, it’s impossible to go to an Italian’s house and not find the traditional Christmas sweets, among which the pandoro, the panettone and the torrone are the most famous.The traditional Veronese pandoro is a simple and delicious “bread” made with sourdough starter, beer years, eggs, butter, vanilla e powdered sugar. The pandoro has a delicate taste and on top of being eaten as a dessert, many Italians also dip it in their milk or cappuccino at breakfast. I believe that the tastiness of this sweet resides in its simplicity.On the other hand, the panettone is quite a sophisticated sweet with a much more distinct taste compared to the pandoro. The main ingredients are similar but in the panettone, there are also malt, raisins, acacia honey, dried cedar, dried orange, orange paste, tangerine paste and lemon paste, giving it therefore a fruity aroma.The Christmas sweet that I love the most is torrone!Torrone is made mainly of egg white, honey and sugar and filled with almonds, walnuts, pistacchi, peanuts or toasted hazelnuts. Nowadays, there are a myriad different variations, from milk chocolate to dark or white chocolate. My favorite is the classic one with milk chocolate and hazelnuts even if I don’t like hazelnuts and I always take them out with a knife. Although I could buy a version without the hazelnuts, the latter give the chocolate an impeccable taste. Those of you who have tried Nutella know exactly what I’m talking about.Whether you are a fan of sweets or not, there are so many different ways to prepare each of these pastries to satisfy every taste, even the pickiest like me.
The Tradition of the Meals
Ever since I was a little girl, my family has kept the tradition of not eating meat on Christmas Eve but fish. This custom dates back to Medieval times when in reality, instead of fish, people ate very light and poor dishes as a small sacrifice in preparation of the arrival of the Messiah. With time, people started eating fish instead, a food quite far from poor.If during Christmas Eve people are supposed to eat less (even if I’m not sure how many actually follow this tradition), at Christmas there’s no holding back!Here is my family’s traditional Christmas meal. To start, of course there are always many appetizers: various cured meats and cheeses, buffalo mozzarella, tomato bruschette, focaccia, mixed olives and sometimes even coppiette from Ariccia. After about an hour, we finally move to the first course with my mother’s famous lasagna. Then, an hour or two later, even if the majority of us are exploding, the second course arrives (I’m vegetarian so thankfully I can skip it): lamb ribs, breaded veal and at times even lemon scaloppine (meat not fish). Obviously, we also need several side dishes such as salad, green beans, artichokes and baked potatoes.
The Games
After having eaten for at least three to four hours, my family and I, sometimes with friends, spend the entire evening and often night playing cards and tombola while snacking on all of the delicious sweets I mentioned above. Among the most popular games are Sette e mezzo, Tre sette and Salta Cavallo; all very fun that can be played with many people. For those of you who don’t know what tombola is, this game, strictly played during the Christmas holidays, is similar to bingo but instead of only winning when you have five numbers in a line, there are also prizes for ambo (two numbers in a line), terno (three), quaterna (four), cinquina (five) and finally tombola (the entire scorecard).
Santo Stefano
Since celebrating Christmas Eve and Christmas were not enough, December 26th is also a holiday, in honor of Santo Stefano, the first martyr of Christianity. The day of Santo Stefano is a national holiday not only in Italy but also in Austria, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro e Romania. In England it is called Boxing Day. In reality, the 26th does not correspond to the recurrence of the Saint but it is celebrated on that day in order to make the Christmas holidays longer.
Epiphany and Befana
Epiphany is a Christian holiday that celebrates the revelation of God to man through Jesus and it is observed on January 6th, reason why the schools don’t re-open until the 7th. The Greek work “epiphàneia” means in fact revelation and even today people use the expression “to have an epiphany” to indicate a special moment in which an object, a person or an event reveals to us a much deeper meaning, often of life itself.
But what does Epiphany have to do with the old witch called Befana?
The night of the Epiphany is considered magical. Every region has its own legend and tradition but the most popular figure is without a doubt the Befana, an old lady who, on top of a flying broom, brings presents or charcoal to children during the night of January 5th. Why charcoal? Children who have not been good the past year receive charcoal while the little angels who always behave receive gifts. Of course my mother always used this story to blackmail me and to make me behave even though it didn’t work much and the Befana brought me way more charcoal then gifts.If you happen to be in Rome during the Epiphany, spend an evening in Piazza Navona, filled with artisan stands, replicas of the Befana, games, sweets, cotton candy and much more!
Dal torrone al carbone, le vacanze di Natale fanno tutti innamorare!
Gli italiani amano far festa e su questo non c’è dubbio; ma quando arriva il Natale, i festeggiamenti non finiscono più! In Italia le vacanze iniziano alla vigilia e finiscono il 6 gennaio con l’epifania.
I dolci
Durante i mesi di dicembre e gennaio, è impossibile andare a casa di italiani e non trovare i tipici dolci natalizi, fra cui il pandoro, il panettone e il torrone sono i più famosi.Il pandoro veronese tradizionale è un semplice e gustoso “pane” dolce fatto con lievito madre, lievito di birra, uova, burro, vaniglia e l’immancabile zucchero a velo. Il pandoro ha un sapore piuttosto delicato ed oltre ad essere mangiato come dessert, molti italiani lo intingono nel latte o nel caffè latte a colazione. Secondo me, la bontà di questo dolce sta proprio nella sua semplicità.D’altro canto, il panettone, è un dolce abbastanza sofisticato con un sapore ben più distinto rispetto al Pandoro. Gli ingredienti principali sono simili ma nel panettone vengono anche aggiunti malto, uvetta, miele di acacia, cedro candido, arancia candida, pasta di arance, pasta di mandarini e pasta di limoni, dandogli quindi un aroma fruttato.Dolce natalizio per eccellenza nonché il mio preferito: il torrone!Questo dolce è principalmente composto da albume d’uovo, miele e zucchero, farcito con mandorle, noci, pistacchi, arachidi o nocciole tostate. Al giorno d’oggi, ne esistono una miriade di versioni diverse, dal cioccolato al latte, al fondente o bianco. Il mio preferito è il torrone classico al cioccolato con nocciole, anche se in realtà a me non piacciono le nocciole e quindi finisco sempre a “snocciolarlo”, ovvero gli tolgo le nocciole con un coltello. Nonostante vi sono versioni senza nocciole, quest’ultime danno alla cioccolata un sapore impeccabile. Quelli di voi che conoscono la nutella sanno esattamente di cosa sto parlando.Che siate amanti di dolci o meno, esistono molte varianti per preparare ciascuno di questi dolci in modo da soddisfare tutti i tipi gusti, anche i più particolari come me.
La tradizione dei pasti
Sin da quando ero bambina, la mia famiglia ha mantenuto la tradizione di non mangiare carne alla vigilia, ma pesce. Questa usanza risale al Medioevo quando in realtà, invece del pesce, era tipico mangiare piatti leggeri e poveri, una sorta di fioretto in preparazione all’arrivo del Messia. Con il passare degli anni, la gente cominciò a mangiare il pesce, pietanza tutt’altro che povera.Se durante la viglia bisognerebbe mangiare di meno (anche se non so in quanti seguano questa tradizione), a Natale non si fanno sconti!Ecco il tipico pranzo di Natale della mia famiglia. Per iniziare, non possono mancare gli antipasti: misto di salumi e formaggi, mozzarella di bufala, bruschette al pomodoro, focaccia, olive miste e a volte coppiette di Ariccia. Dopo circa un’ora si passa finalmente al primo con la famosa lasagna di mia madre. Dopo un’altra oretta, anche se la maggior parte di noi stanno scoppiando, arriva il secondo (io sono vegetariana quindi per fortuna lo salto): costolette d’abbacchio, fettine panate e a volte anche scaloppine al limone. Ovviamente non possono mancare i contorni; di solito insalata, fagiolini, carciofi e patate al forno.
I giochi
Dopo esserci ingozzati per almeno tre o quattro ore, la ma famiglia ed io, a volte anche con degli amici, passiamo tutta la sera, e spesso la notte, a giocare a carte e a tombola; e ovviamente a mangiare i dolci di cui vi ho parlato. Fra i giochi di carte più famosi, vi sono Sette e mezzo, Tre sette, Salta cavallo e il Mercante in Fiera; tutti divertentissimi che si possono giocare in molti. Per chi di voi non conoscesse la tombola, questo gioco, prettamente natalizio, è molto simile al bingo ma invece di vincere solo quando si hanno cinque numeri di fila, a Tombola ci sono premi anche per l’ambo (due numeri di fila), il terno (tre numeri), la quaterna (quattro numeri), la cinquina (cinque numeri) e la tombola (l’intera cartella).
Santo Stefano
Visto che festeggiare la vigilia e il Natale non ci bastava, il giorno del 26 Dicembre è anch’esso di festa, ricordando Santo Stefano, il primo martire della Cristianità. Il giorno di Santo Stefano è una festa nazionale non solo in Italia ma anche in Austria, Germania, Irlanda, Danimarca, Croazia, Serbia, Montenegro e Romania. In Inghilterra è invece chiamato il Boxing Day. In realtà, il 26 non corrisponde affatto alla ricorrenza del Santo ma si festeggia quel giorno semplicemente per allungare le vacanze di Natale.
L’Epifania e la Befana
L’Epifania è una festa cristiana che celebra la rivelazione di Dio agli uomini tramite Gesù e si festeggia il 6 gennaio, ragione per la quale le scuole non riaprono fino al 7. La parola greca “epiphàneia” significa proprio rivelazione e al giorno d’oggi su usa l’espressione “avere un’epifania” per indicare un momento speciale un cui un oggetto, una persona o un episodio ci rivela un significato più profondo, spesso della vita stessa.
Ma cosa c’entra l’epifania con la befana?
La notte dell’epifania è ritenuta magica. Ogni regione ha la sua leggenda e le proprie tradizioni, con animali parlanti e volanti ma la figura popolare più famosa è senza dubbio la Befana, una vecchietta che, a cavallo di una scopa volante, porta i regali o il carbone ai bambini durante la notte del 5 gennaio. Probabilmente vi starete chiedendo perché il carbone? Il carbone viene portato ai bambini che sono stati cattivi mentre i regali a quelli buoni. Ovviamente, mia madre ha sempre usato questa storia per ricattarmi e per farmi comportare bene anche se in realtà non ha funzionato molto e la Befana mi ha portato il carbone più spesso che i regali.Se capitate a Roma durante l’Epifania, non potete non passare una serata a Piazza Navona, ricoperta da tendoni, bancarelle di artigiano, giostre, repliche della befana, giochi, dolcetti, zucchero filato e molto altro!
