The Venice International Film Festival is one of the first – and most famous – festivals of world cinema (alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival, also known as the “Big Three”).
Its official launch was on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior in the evening of 1932 and it became an annual appointment since 1935, to which more and more countries gradually joined in. Still today, the festival takes place in Venice, and the films are shown in the historic Palazzo del Cinema, on the Lungomare Marconi, and in other locations nearby.
During the festival, works of great prestige are presented, bearing the signature of the most successful contemporary directors and interpreters. The best film is awarded the Golden Lion, the lion of the Basilica of San Marco, a symbol of the city of Venice; while the best director gets the Silver Lion. The runner-up receives the Grand Jury Prize, while the best-emerging actor is awarded the Marcello Mastroianni prize. The event has a worldwide resonance, not only for cinema lovers but for all those who look forward to the Red Carpet and the parties hosted for the films “in competition” and “out of competition”. On this occasion, many designers and sponsors compete to dress celebrities and artists with increasingly bold and creative pieces.
The 76th edition will start on August 28th and end on September 7th. Among the most anticipated films, there are Jokerby Todd Phillips, Ad Astraby James Gray with Brad Pitt as protagonist; while among Italian competitors La Mafia non è più quella di una volta by Franco Maresco and Il Sindaco di Rione Sanitàby Mario Martone. If you happen to be in Venice during those days, you will not want to miss this world-renowned event!
